Are you dreaming of having a baby girl? While no natural method can offer a 100% guarantee, there are a few things you can try in order to increase your chances of conceiving a girl.
However, be aware that many of the methods for swaying the odds in favor of a girl are not ideal for fertility in general. For example, avoiding intercourse close to ovulation may increase your chances of having a girl, but it will reduce your chances of conceiving in the first place.
If you experience any difficulty getting pregnant at all, we recommend that you focus on optimizing your chances to conceive a baby of either sex – after all, you still have a (nearly) 50% chance of having a girl!
Dr Shettles’ method for a girl
The idea behind Dr Shettles’ method is that male and female sperm have different characteristics, and that different circumstances will favor one or the other. Male sperm cells are believed to be quicker than female sperm cells, but they are also more fragile and short-lived. Therefore, by creating an environment that favors the slower, but more robust female sperm, you can increase the likelihood of conceiving a baby girl.
Intercourse timing for having a girl
Because the average male sperm cell is thought to be faster than the average female sperm cell, having intercourse close to ovulation will increase the odds that a male sperm reaches the egg first.
In order to increase your chances of having a girl, you should therefore have sex up to 2-3 days before ovulation, but then avoid intercourse (or use a condom) until 2 days after ovulation.
In this way, most of the weaker male sperm is assumed to have died before the egg is released, and the majority of sperm cells still alive and available to fertilize the egg will be “girl sperm”.
Do keep in mind that with this method, you must avoid sex on your most fertile days (the last 2 days before ovulation and ovulation day itself), which will reduce your chances of getting pregnant at all.
Also, because it’s difficult to predict the exact ovulation day, it can be rather tricky to get the timing right. Read more here on how to pinpoint your ovulation day as precisely as possible.
Creating the right vaginal pH for conceiving a girl
The pH (acidity) level in your vagina can influence the likelihood of having a girl. All sperm cells prefer alkaline environments (high pH level), but the stronger female sperm are supposed to be more resistant to lower pH levels. By trying to create a more acidic environment in your vagina, you may favor the female sperm cells.
But in the same way as avoiding intercourse close to ovulation will reduce your chances of getting pregnant at all, an acidic vaginal environment will lower your overall fertility. Use these methods carefully, and avoid them if you are having any trouble conceiving.
Choose the right lovemaking position: The area around your cervix is more alkaline than the entrance to you vagina. Shallow penetration and ejaculation in the lower part of the vagina will give the female sperm cells an advantage over the male ones. With the woman on top, she can control the depth of penetration.
Spooning (both partners lying on the side while he penetrates her from behind) is a comfortable position which is also perfect for this purpose.
Avoid having an orgasm: When the female partner has an orgasm, the cervical mucus in her vagina becomes more alkaline, thereby favoring male sperm. Avoiding orgasm during your most fertile days may therefore increase your chances of getting pregnant with a girl.
Diet tips for conceiving a girl
In a recent British study, the researchers found that women with a high energy intake prior to conception were more likely to bear boys, while women with a lower nutritional intake had more girls.
The only individual food item strongly associated with infant sex, the study found, was breakfast cereal: Women who had baby boys ate more breakfast cereal than women who had girls.
If you’re longing for a girl, then, you may want to choose something else than cereal for breakfast, and to avoid excessive eating. But beware of excessive dieting as well: Undernourisment can lead to ovulatory infertility, and your body needs a healthy nutritional balance to sustain a pregnancy. Eat enough, but not more than you need.
